Scope of Services Provided
In its early years, CBI was engaged primarily on civil engineering projects such as water, sewerage, roads and stormwater drainage. From 1950, the scope of activities was broadened to include structural and electrical engineering, architecture, town planning, quantity surveying and project management.
Following the retirement of the two senior architectural Partners in the mid 1990’s, CBI has concentrated its resources on the core disciplines of structural, civil and electrical engineering, and project management. In-house quantity surveying resources have been retained for the substantial industrial projects CBI undertakes. These resources are supplemented by the services of Abakali Quantity Surveyors, a firm of previously disadvantaged professionals, who work within CBI’s offices, and who CBI has taken on to share its vast experience.
CBI provides an integrated multi-professional service and is therefore able to carry out complete and varied projects within its own organisation.
In addition to major projects such as the Mondi developments at Merebank and Richards Bay, the Sappi Mill as Saiccor Umkomaas, the water supply to the Black Mountain Mine in the Northern Cape, and Club Mykonos at Langebaan, all of which required considerable technical resources and effective project management, CBI has undertaken, and successfully completed, numerous engineering and architectural projects of varying scope and size.
Over the past 50 years CBI has liaised successfully with a number of overseas specialists on the design and construction of major industrial, architectural, water and wastewater projects. These associations have been invaluable in expanding the firm’s experience and expertise and has enabled CBI to remain at the forefront of international design techniques and specifications.
The Joint Venture formed with Arup South Africa in 2002 enabled CBI to offer to its Clients additional specialized services including project planning and development, transportation, environmental and communications technology. Through the Joint Venture, CBI has access to the global Arup technology resources.
